There might be a problem with that number one choice.

Rain On The Roof- Loving Spoonful
And, although the word _rain_ is not in the title, it's certainly in the lyrics and one of MY favorite songs- Bruce Springsteen's Meet Me At Mary's Place.
Gosh. There are so many rain songs. Great list.

I Wish It Would Rain Down-Phil Collins

Now, I'll have "Ain't No Sunshine" in my head for the rest of the day. Great song.

I agree, great list.

Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

I keep thinking of great rain songs now, but I will refrain from typing them all. :)

Nicol- DAMN! You're right! Dylan!

You mentioned Dylan and I always think of that scene in "High Fidelity" when Cusack is standing in the rain and they play Dylan's "Most of the Time". Love it.
I left off "Rainy Night In Georgia" for geographic reasons.
There are a lot of songs with rain in them that aren't about rain.

Sister! I can't beleive you brought up a Brucester that I didn't know....NOYCE!

Raining in my heqart by Buddy Holly always kills me. And that "Same Auld Langs Syne" by Fogelberg song that has that great line:
"...and the snow turned into rain..
Well I could do this all night, since I am not RIDING!!!!

Sorry but "Grey Sky Morning" by Vertical Horizon....killer melody and the lyrics are brutal. but sadly it never rains in the song. It just sounds like its going to rain.

Great list WB!

I suppose there are thousands of rainy day tunes but here are a couple more...

Bob Dylan - "Buckets of Rain" (an all-time fave)
Dire Straits - "It Never Rains" (you don't hear this sweety very often)
The Doors - "Riders on the Storm" (tired but great classic)

Nice A.S. I thought of riders, I love the recording of the shower at the end. Plus maybe the best Doors lyric of all. I may need to get some Doors back on the ipod.
I thought of Bad Rain by the Allman Bro's but its just about a woman, not rain.
(let me put my helmet on before I hit "publish")

I just thought of "Louisiana
1927" by Randy Newman, really good. I like his voice, some people can't stand him but I dig it. Theres a bunch of really good flood songs too!

Good, good, but Willie does a much better version of Hank and it breaks my heart every time. And Juancho's right, the #1 is not worthy, move up the carpenters.

and what about "Purple Rain" or "Blame it on the Rain"

Classics, I just couldn't bring myself to put them in the same comment with Willie; Carpenters even were almost blasphemy, but man, I like that skinny singin' gal.

#2 ~~ I hadn't heard it in awhile and listened to it again. Love it!

Nice additions to the list too. Of course Purple rain had to be added!

Alright I didn't want to go all musician on everybody but first The Carpenters were poppy but no one can deny the quality of those songs. Google some of those writers, Williams, Bacharach, quality. Plus Karen was a bonafide musician. She never played drums on the records, (Hal Blane did) but I have seen old clips of her playing and singing that are VERY impressive. Say you don't like, but don't crack on the Carps.
The Who song; The step down, arpeggio(?) figure at the end and the vocal performance are among the greatest in rock history. Plus how many people left a vocal track on the final mix where the singer goes for it so hard his voice breaks? 20 years before Kobain made it cool. Don't even get me started on how good Pete's lyrics are. Sorry it stays. There's a great Eddie Vedder version from the movie "Reign On Me", you should check out.
"Purple Rain" is one of my all time favorites and I used to sing it back when I was playing covers....I never did it justice, but I loved singing it. Guitar solo?...ALL TIME. Prince may be the most underrated guitar player in music. I think we should vote one off and add His Purpleness!

ok, vote off Joe Satriani, I feel Prince's guitar is better than Joe's anyway. Joe is perfection, Prince is pure.

And yes, I do like the Carpenters; it was my first 8 track and I'll never forget. It's all about the timing-when you hear the music. I never heard the Who at any crucial moment in my life. They're excellent I know, but they don't stir anything and now-they're just CSI themes.

oh, and "one more rainy day" by Deep Purple
OR "Red Rain" by Peter Gabriel-awsome!

Or for the Roadies: "It's Raining Men" hallelujah it's a raining men, uh huh...
Sing it!

Never heard the DP song...nice one Mag (you are a formidable foe).
I can't believe you got Red Rain and I didn't!! "Here Comes The Flood" is a great song from the same record....sadly no rain.
I was waiting for someone to throw a stone at Satch. It's so easy to dismiss that which we know nothing about. Is he a flame thrower? Yes. Does he have soul? A boatload. Have you heard that song? It's etherial, plus it can't be removed because it is a quote from Bladerunner...can't pull the trigger Mag.
Back to the list...

I will consider bumping The Police or J.T. but someone better form a damn good reason!

Anonymous said...

Damn, I like the Police. And I'll freely admit to knowing only one or two Satriani songs.

Dire Straits "It Never Rains"
good lyrics

Isn't there a Gordon Lightfoot song about rain?
